THANE
I couldnât wait to get Elise home. Our home, if sheâs willing to share it with me. We havenât talked yet about where we will live. Although Elise mentioned that she and her other sisters are looking for an office building down in Cody, where Jacks can work and supervise their employees, thatâs only for business. Where does she want to live?
From our place to Chandler and Jackâ, itâs about a forty-minute drive. My beautiful songbird is now fast asleep in the front passenger seat next to me, with her head back on the headrest. I turned the radio off and raised my window as soon as she dozed off just to listen to her breathing as she sleeps.
Our talk yesterday solidifies that in the past four years, same as Iâve been thinking about her, she has been thinking about me. I canât say that the time we spent apart was a waste. On the contrary, it really benefitted her and me.
Elise is one of the greatest gospel singers of this time. She has won numerous awards. Her last two albums have gone double-platinum, with multiple top-ten singles. Her philanthropy work has helped thousands.
On my end, these last few years have been about planning, rebuilding, partnerships, and making my family ranch into a multi-corporation.
I pull into the garage and click the button to close the bay door, keeping the cool air out as I help her from my truck. I get out, but when I close my door, I must have woken her. I look through the windshield, and she is rubbing her eyes.
I come around, open her door, and hold out my hand to help her down from out of the truck. My eyes fix on her patent-leather, black, three-or four-inch heels. The whole shoe, or boot, comes up just over her ankle. I donât know how she wears these high heels, but they work all right for me.
I once saw her at an awards show wearing similar heels. Ever since, Iâve been fascinated by what she wears on her feet. Her formal clothes say a lot about her. She wears a mixture of classic 1940s and 1950s dresses paired with modern-style shoes.
âYou like my booties, cowboy?â
I look up. She was watching me as I was staring down at her shoes, and sheâs now smiling. âIs that what these are called?â
She slowly nods. âUh-huh. Half-boot and half-shoe.â Sheâs still smiling.
âYes, maâam. I most definitely like what I see,â I answer and pull her up close to me, still holding onto her hand.
This makes her smile widen, showing her pretty dimples, and she lets loose a throaty giggle and blushes. âWell, Iâm glad you like what you see,â she says shyly and turns her head away.
âElise, are you flirting with your husband?â I ask.
She doesnât have to answer; I already know. I lift her chin as she tries to duck her head to avoid eye contact with me.
I stare down into her beautiful eyes, and before I can stop the request from passing my lips, I say, âElise, tell me, I am yours.
